Message from the Artistic Director
It is with great pride and pleasure that I announce our 2009-10
season, which brings classic titles together with new award-winning
works directed by some of the most exceptional voices in
Bay Area theatre.
Our season opens with 'Art', by Yasmina Reza, a dazzling duel of
wits in a comedy about art and friendship, directed by Bay Area
theatre favorite, Soren Oliver. This year's holiday offering, the fantastic
musical Scrooge, will be directed by Jessica Richards who rejoins us from California
Shakespeare Theater after her wonderful production of Miracle on 34th Street last year. Early spring heralds the arrival of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being
Earnest. Susannah Martin returns to direct this masterpiece, following her critically acclaimed
production of Rabbit Hole last season. We close with David Auburn's Proof,
and are thrilled to welcome Mary Beth Cavanaugh from Berkeley Repertory Theatre
as director of this subtle and profound play.
This also marks my second season as Artistic Director, and I am enormously grateful
for the generous support and encouragement I have received from our Board
of Directors, community leaders, the incredibly dedicated Town Hall staff, and most
importantly, you, our audience, our community. You are the very pillars upon which
this building stands. Last year we came together and survived not only the financial
challenges facing so many non-profit arts organizations, but a flood that destroyed
our lobby and production offices. It is thanks to your support that we are still here, that
our award-winning educational programs continue to grow, and that the excellence
of our main stage productions is recognized by critics and audience members alike.
We do this work to provide our community with a cultural gathering place, where we
can meet together to laugh, cry and perhaps understand ourselves, and each other,
a little bit better.
I hope to see you all at your Town Hall.
